Create Your Dream Island runner-up #10

We've announced the grand-prize winner of the Create Your Dream Island contest. To read about the winning entry, Arabian Nights Island, click here.

We're also featuring the 10 runners-up, in alphabetical order. Today's runner-up is:

Symphony Island, submitted by Erika M. of Nebraska!

The pitch: Karl Notune hates music -- and has an evil plan! It's up to you to save the music before it's too late!

Why we liked it: Now that we have music and sound effects on Poptropica, it's a great idea to make a whole Island about music. Erika suggested that players would be able to play many different instruments -- including piano, saxophone, and drums -- and gave us a funny villain in "Karl Notune." This entry rocked!

We asked Erika, whose avatar name is Fast Fire, a few questions. Here are her answers!
Poptropica Creators: How did you come up with the idea for your Island?
Erika: I was brainstorming ideas for the island, and then I realized that I wanted to listen to music. Then it hit me, what about a musical Island?! Plus I always loved instrumental music.
Poptropica Creators: How did you react when you found out you’d won?
Erika: I just couldn't believe myself, I felt like I wanted to scream with happiness and do a backflip.
Poptropica Creators: How long have you been playing Poptropica?
Erika: About 2 years.
Poptropica Creators: Which Island is your favorite?
Erika: I was always fond of Cryptids Island because I liked the creatures.
Poptropica Creators: What 3 things would you want with you on a deserted island?
Erika: My Harry Potter book set, my piano, and a helicopter to fly home.
Thanks for your entry, Erika. You've got perfect pitch!

That does it for all of the winners. Once again, we got so many wonderful entries from Poptropica players -- far more than we had prizes for. Our thanks to everybody who submitted an entry!

Create Your Dream Island runner-up #9

We've announced the grand-prize winner of the Create Your Dream Island contest. To read about the winning entry, Arabian Nights Island, click here.

We're also featuring the 10 runners-up, in alphabetical order. Today's runner-up is:

Stormchaser Island, submitted by Laura S. of Virginia!

The pitch: Your Poptropican travels alongside one of Poptropica's most famous meteorologists and tracks a dangerous series of storms.

Why we liked it: "This is gold," someone said when reading Laura's entry, and nobody disagreed. What an exciting idea! In Stormchaser Island, players would travel the hemisphere trying to discover the source of increasingly powerful storms. Our sound effects team would love to take on this challenge!

We asked Laura, whose avatar name is Blue Horse, a few questions. Here are her answers!
Poptropica Creators: How did you come up with the idea for your Island?
Laura: I spent a lot of time thinking about my idea, and after a few tries, it just came to me!
Poptropica Creators: How did you react when you found out you’d won?
Laura: When I found out that I had won, my jaw dropped. Out of hundreds of entries, I had won! [Actually, it was thousands! -C.C.]
Poptropica Creators: How long have you been playing Poptropica?
Laura: I have been playing Poptropica for a few years now, and it is my favorite website!
Poptropica Creators: Which Island is your favorite?
Laura: My favorite island has to be Spy Island, because I love all of the neat items that your character can collect.
Poptropica Creators: What 3 things would you want with you on a deserted island?
Laura: If I was on a deserted island and could only have three items, I would have:
1. A pocket knife
2. Flint and steel to create fire
3. A spile to get fresh water from trees
We hope you're enjoying Survival, in that case. Thank you for your entry, Laura!

Create Your Dream Island runner-up #8

We've announced the grand-prize winner of the Create Your Dream Island contest. To read about the winning entry, Arabian Nights Island, click here.

We're also featuring the 10 runners-up, in alphabetical order. Today's runner-up is:

Space Bar Island, submitted by Naomi P. of North Carolina!

The pitch: On Space Bar Island, you're trapped in the newest computer, the "Lap Life," and you meet who's really running the internet.

Why we liked it: Cyberpunk is another underserved genre on Poptropica. The idea of seeing the internet from the inside-out is a great one, and Naomi took it to the next level with a terrific villain: a pixelated woman called "Mother Board," who controls the entire internet!

We asked Naomi, whose avatar name is Sleepy Panda, a few questions. Here are her answers!
Poptropica Creators: How did you come up with the idea for your Island?
Naomi: I came up with the idea while using one of my personal devices and thought of the two most popular technology companies in the world, Apple and Microsoft. Since the these two companies are "rivals" I thought what would happen if they came together. Would they have great success or have no success at all? That's how Orange Door incorporated came together.
Poptropica Creators: How did you react when you found out you’d won?
Naomi: I reacted by just jumping a bit after I was told on the phone.
Poptropica Creators: How long have you been playing Poptropica?
Naomi: I have been playing on Poptropica for three years.
Poptropica Creators: Which Island is your favorite?
Naomi: My favorite Island is Night Watch Island.
Poptropica Creators: What 3 things would you want with you on a deserted island?
Naomi: Three things I would want on a deserted island would be: a two-story house made of bamboo, a lifetime supply of turkey sandwiches, and a cellphone that had connection to anywhere.
Hack the planet, Naomi!

Create Your Dream Island runner-up #7

We've announced the grand-prize winner of the Create Your Dream Island contest. To read about the winning entry, Arabian Nights Island, click here.

We're also featuring the 10 runners-up, in alphabetical order. Today's runner-up is:

Shakespeare Island, submitted by Kailey W. of Minnesota!

The pitch: Players help Shakespeare put on a Romeo and Juliet play. Players sign up to be an actor, backstage organizer, or costume designer. But during the show, another actor gets stage fright and players will have to dress up and sing the song.

Why we liked it: First of all, who doesn't love the Bard? Second, from the costumes to the scenery, this would be an excellent setting for a Poptropica Island. Last but not least, Kailey's idea to let the player take on one of a few different roles would be an interesting game mechanic for us to explore. This was a very well thought-out entry!

We asked Kailey, whose avatar name is Red Grape, a few questions. Here are her answers!
Poptropica Creators: How did you come up with the idea for your Island?
Kailey: I’ve always had a passion for theatre so I thought it would be a fun idea.
Poptropica Creators: How did you react when you found out you’d won?
Kailey: I was excited. I never thought that my idea would’ve made it this far.
Poptropica Creators: How long have you been playing Poptropica?
Kailey: For about five years.
Poptropica Creators: Which Island is your favorite?
Kailey: Mystery Train.
Poptropica Creators: What 3 things would you want with you on a deserted island?
Kailey: 1. Food  2. Water 3. And a prepped helicopter
All the world's a stage, and we're glad to have players like Kailey!

Create Your Dream Island runner-up #6

We've announced the grand-prize winner of the Create Your Dream Island contest. To read about the winning entry, Arabian Nights Island, click here.

We're also featuring the 10 runners-up, in alphabetical order. Today's runner-up is:

Prehistoric Island, submitted by Sofia W. of Illinois!

The pitch: A paleontologist built a time portal to study living dinosaurs, but something went wrong and now dinosaurs are coming into the 21st century. Poptropicans must reassemble the time portal and send them back.

Why we liked it: Sofia wasn't the only person to send us an idea about dinosaurs, but hers stood apart in two ways. First, she had the dinosaurs coming into the present day, which is a fun twist. Second, Sofia reached out to two real-life paleontologists, Jack Horner and Larry Witmer, to ask if she could include them as characters on her Island -- and they both said yes! Way to go the extra mile, Sofia!

We asked Sofia, whose avatar name is Friendly Cactus, a few questions. Here are her answers!
Poptropica Creators: How did you come up with the idea for your Island?
Sofia: I came up with the idea for Prehistoric Island from my life-time love of dinosaurs and everything ancient.
Poptropica Creators: How did you react when you found out you’d won?
Sofia: I have to admit, I was VERY suprised when I got the news that I'd won. I never win anything. :)
Poptropica Creators: How long have you been playing Poptropica?
Sofia: I've been playing Poptropica for about 4 years.
Poptropica Creators: Which Island is your favorite?
Sofia: My favorite island is Spy Island because of all the action and cool stuff you can do.
Poptropica Creators: What 3 things would you want with you on a deserted island?
Sofia: If on a deserted island, I would bring a horse, a pet lion, and a ton of fossils and artifacts I could excavate. :3
Just as long as the lion doesn't eat the horse, that sounds pretty good. Congratulations, Sofia!

Create Your Dream Island runner-up #5

We've announced the grand-prize winner of the Create Your Dream Island contest. To read about the winning entry, Arabian Nights Island, click here.

We're also featuring the 10 runners-up, in alphabetical order. Today's runner-up is:

Pharaoh's Fantasies Island, submitted by Calloway B. of Kentucky!

The pitch: In my Island, Poptropicans would enter the mind of King Tutankhaman, and defeat the gods of Egypt.

Why we liked it: Calloway's wasn't the only entry that dealt with Ancient Egypt in some way, but the twist -- going inside the mind of the Pharaoh -- was inspired. Calloway also suggested some very colorful characters and monsters for the player to battle. It was easy to see how Pharaoh's Fantasies would make a fantastic Island!

We reached out to Calloway to ask him some questions about his entry, and have not yet heard back. When we do, we'll post his answers!

We're also featuring the 10 runners-up, in alphabetical order. Today's runner-up is:

House of Cards Island, submitted by Joel B. of Ohio!

The pitch: In Card Kingdom, the Ace of Hearts has been stolen from the Heart Kingdom. The King and Queen of Hearts need your help to find it before there is a war.

Why we liked it: Joel's vision of the "Card Kingdom" sounded like an incredibly fun place for us to design. He sent an additional sheet with several characters, as well as descriptions of the traits of each card suit. It was some impressive world building!

We asked Joel, whose avatar name is Giant Foot, a few questions. Here are his answers!
Poptropica Creators: How did you come up with the idea for your Island?
Joel: My sister and I were jumping on the trampoline after the contest was announced, thinking up ideas for islands and House Of Cards was my favorite out of all of them.
Poptropica Creators: How did you react when you found out you’d won?
Joel: I ran around the house screaming. It was awesome.
Poptropica Creators: How long have you been playing Poptropica?
Joel: About 5 years.
Poptropica Creators: Which Island is your favorite?
Joel: That's a hard choice, but I have to go with Cryptids Island.
Poptropica Creators: What 3 things would you want with you on a deserted island?
Joel: 1) A teleporter. 2) A lifetime supply of bacon. 3) Duct tape.
Maybe a deck of playing cards to pass the time... Thanks for your entry, Joel!

We've announced the grand-prize winner of the Create Your Dream Island contest. To read about the winning entry, Arabian Nights Island, click here.

We're also featuring the 10 runners-up, in alphabetical order. Today's runner-up is:

Golden Mustache Island, submitted by Emma T. of New Jersey!

The pitch: On Golden Mustache Island, people look for where the golden mustache is and who took it.

Why we liked it: Emma's idea brought a smile to everyone's face even before they read about the giant mustache monster. This was a unique and wonderful entry, and we absolutely loved it. Truthfully, we weren't sure we could do it justice!

We asked Emma, whose avatar name is Strange Goose, a few questions. Here are her answers!
Poptropica Creators: How did you come up with the idea for your Island?
Emma: I love mustaches and the 70s. I thought it would be more exciting if there was an idol/statue stolen from the mustachians (instead of Poptropicans :)
Poptropica Creators: How did you react when you found out you’d won?
Emma: I was so happy I screamed!
Poptropica Creators: How long have you been playing Poptropica?
Emma: 5 years, since Kindergarten - I found it on a school approved website - FunBrain.
Poptropica Creators: Which Island is your favorite?
Emma:  Mystery Train. I like the mystery and history about the island.
Poptropica Creators: What 3 things would you want with you on a deserted island?
Emma: Harry Potter (the series of books), computer (for Poptropica), lifetime supply of food
One thing's for sure: none of the Poptropica Creators will ever forget Golden Mustache Island. You stay golden, Emma!

Create Your Dream Island runner-up #2

We've announced the grand-prize winner of the Create Your Dream Island contest. To read about the winning entry, Arabian Nights Island, click here.

We're also featuring the 10 runners-up, in alphabetical order. Today's runner-up is:

Fashion Crisis Island, submitted by Elsa W. of Illinois!

The pitch: When you're on Fashion Crisis Island, you must recover a stolen line of clothes for a very famous designer right before an important show.

Why we liked it: Costumizing is one of the most popular things to do on Poptropica, and yet we've never made an Island based entirely around using the Costumizer. Elsa's idea presented a lot of opportunities to let players create new costumes. It was also set in the the 1940s, which we haven't done before, and featured some famous fashion icons as characters.

We asked Elsa, whose avatar name is Bronze Fox, a few questions. Here are her answers.
Poptropica Creators: How did you come up with the idea for your Island?
Elsa: I love fashion, and thought it would be cool to combine that with a mystery/crime for a fun island.
Poptropica Creators: How did you react when you found out you’d won?
Elsa: I was SO happy and couldn't believe it!
Poptropica Creators: How long have you been playing Poptropica?
Elsa: Around 2 years or so.
Poptropica Creators: Which Island is your favorite?
Elsa: I really love Mythology Island!
Poptropica Creators: What 3 things would you want with you on a deserted island?
Elsa: Probably food, tools, and a calm mind.
Nothing about a fancy beachgoing outfit? Well, your calm mind will take you far, Elsa. Thank you for your entry!

Create Your Dream Island runner-up #1

We've announced the grand-prize winner of the Create Your Dream Island contest. To read about the winning entry, Arabian Nights Island, click here.

We're also featuring the 10 runners-up, in alphabetical order. Today's runner-up is:

Bikes Vs. Boards Island, submitted by Tori V. of Texas!

The pitch: Poptropicans try to stop the constant fighting between the bikers and surfers before anyone gets hurt.

Why we liked it: Tori's Island idea had a great setting -- a beach in the 1960s -- and lots of fun ideas for gameplay. (Who wouldn't want to surf and ride a motorcycle?) We also liked the message about helping two rival groups to understand that their differences aren't as important as what they have in common.

We asked Tori, whose avatar name is Quiet Berry, a few questions. Here are her answers!
Poptropica Creators: How did you come up with the idea for your Island?
Tori: I got the idea from a movie I was watching that day.
Poptropica Creators: How did you react when you found out you’d won?
Tori: So excited...I like winning things!
Poptropica Creators: How long have you been playing Poptropica?
Tori: A couple of years :D
Poptropica Creators: Which Island is your favorite?
Tori: Reality TV Island.
Poptropica Creators: What 3 things would you want with you on a deserted island?
Tori: A working helicopter, a pilot, and a hammock (for before the helicopter takes us back to the mainland).
That's smart thinking, Tori. No wonder you're a runner-up in the Create Your Dream Island contest!

The "Create Your Dream Island" contest winner is...

After going through more than 2,000 entries and months of deliberations, we are thrilled to announce the winner of the "Create Your Dream Island" contest. The winning entry is...

Arabian Nights Island, submitted by Sarah S. from South Carolina!

The pitch: On Arabian Nights Island, Poptropicans go on a quest across the desert to rescue a sultan's genie from the Forty Thieves.

Why we liked it: Everyone who saw Sarah's entry -- from our friends at Penguin, to the creative team at Poptropica led by Jeff Kinney -- said the same thing. Between the characters, the setting, the storyline, and the gameplay, Sarah's entry came to us sounding exactly like an Island we'd put together. It's a classic tale, inspired by one of the oldest storytelling traditions in the world, and yet one we'd never thought about doing before.

When we read her entry, we all knew that we had to make Arabian Nights Island. And so we will, later on this year!

We asked Sarah, whose avatar name is Magic Eagle, a few questions. We are excited to share her answers with you!
Poptropica Creators: How did you come up with the idea for your Island?
Sarah: I came up with the idea for my island because of some souvenirs my dad brought back for my sister and me from his deployment to Kuwait. He had brought back a genie lamp, a magic flying carpet, and most importantly Clyde the Camel. When I was trying to figure out what to do for my island I saw these objects and everything just clicked.
Poptropica Creators: How did you react when you found out you’d won?
Sarah: When I found out I had won, I screamed, jumped up and down, and danced around the house for at least an hour. I almost couldn’t believe it. I thought I was going to wake up and realize it was all just one awesome dream.
Poptropica Creators: How long have you been playing Poptropica?
Sarah: I have been playing Poptropica for four years now. My sister introduced it to me when I was old enough to understand the game. I have been in love with it ever since. I have had a bunch of different characters over the years because I love making new characters.
Poptropica Creators: Which Island is your favorite?
Sarah: My favorite island is definitely Game Show Island because I love all of the different game shows! Mr. Yoshi’s Super Terrific Challenge is my favorite game show because of all the crazy costumes! I thought that was really cool.
Poptropica Creators: What 3 things would you want with you on a deserted island?
Sarah: Three things I would want with me on a deserted island would be a flare gun, Buster my dog, and a full year’s supply of ice cream.
Well, Sarah, we can't give you a full year's supply of ice cream, but we can make your Island dreams come true. We can't wait to make Arabian Nights Island a reality on Poptropica!

As for the "Create Your Dream Island" contest, the fun's not over yet. We also awarded prizes to 10 runners-up. We'll soon be sharing their ideas and stories too!
